Why Does My Leather Camera Strap Squeak? Causes and Fixes

A leather camera strap squeak usually comes from dry leather, metal-on-metal contact, or a loose rivet. Here is how to diagnose and silence it without damaging the strap.

Quick Answer

Most leather camera strap squeaks come from one of three sources: dry leather fibers rubbing against each other, metal hardware contacting metal, or a loose rivet or clasp. Start by isolating the noise with the strap off the camera, then treat the leather with a small amount of conditioner, tighten or pad the hardware, and stop if the squeak comes from inside a rivet you cannot access.

Isolate the Squeak Before You Treat Anything

Take the strap off the camera and hold one end in each hand. Flex the leather slowly along its length and listen. If the squeak follows the flex, the noise is leather-on-leather or leather-on-padding. If it only appears when you move the metal clasp or keyring, the source is hardware. If it happens only when the strap is mounted, the camera body or strap lug may be involved.

  • Flex test: bend the strap gently every few inches and note where the sound starts.
  • Hardware test: hold the leather still and rotate each metal piece by hand.
  • Mount test: attach the strap to the camera and rock the body gently to see if the lug or connector is the source.

Dry Leather and Break-In Noise

New full-grain leather can squeak while it is still stiff and the fibers are rubbing together. This usually fades with use, but you can speed it up by flexing the strap by hand for a few minutes a day. If the leather feels dry rather than stiff, a small amount of leather conditioner worked into the squeaky area can reduce friction. Apply less than you think you need, let it absorb, and buff off any excess so the strap does not feel greasy.

Hardware Rattle and Metal-on-Metal Contact

Steel keyring clasps and brass hardware can squeak or rattle when they rub against each other or against a metal camera lug. Check that the clasp is fully seated and not twisted. If the noise is a light rattle rather than a squeak, a thin leather scratch guard or a small piece of felt between the metal surfaces can quiet it without affecting function. Do not bend or file hardware to stop a noise; that weakens the part.

When to Stop and Choose Another Option

If the squeak comes from inside a sealed rivet, a stitched joint, or the padded neckline where you cannot reach the friction point, stop. Working conditioner into a seam or prying at a rivet can damage the strap. In that case, contact the maker or retailer for guidance, or replace the strap if the noise is constant and the hardware is worn. A strap that squeaks only during the first few weeks of break-in is normal; one that squeaks after months of use usually points to dryness or a loose component.

Squeak Diagnosis Chart

  • Squeak only when flexing the leather: Dry or stiff full-grain leather fibers are rubbing. Apply a small amount of leather conditioner to the squeaky area and flex the strap by hand. If the squeak fades after two or three treatments, it is normal break-in noise.
  • Squeak or rattle at the clasp or keyring: Metal is contacting metal. Check that the clasp is seated correctly and consider a leather scratch guard or felt pad between surfaces. If the hardware is bent or the clasp will not stay seated, stop and replace the hardware or strap.
  • Squeak from inside a rivet, seam, or padded neckline: The friction point is not accessible without disassembly. Do not force conditioner into seams or pry at rivets. Contact the maker or retailer; if the strap is old and the noise is constant, replacement is the safer option.

ONA Straps and What Their Construction Means for Noise

  • The Oslo: The Oslo strap has a padded leather neckline handcrafted from full-grain premium leather and uses steel keyring clasps with leather scratch guards. The scratch guards sit between the metal clasp and the camera lug, which reduces metal-on-metal contact and the rattle that often sounds like a squeak.
  • ONA Shoulder Straps: ONA Shoulder Straps are made from full grain Italian leather with 100% brass hardware and cushioned shoulder pads. Brass hardware can develop a light squeak as it wears in; the cushioned pad also changes how the strap flexes, so isolate whether the noise is in the pad or the hardware before treating the leather.
